Nigeria Police Places Officers On Red Alert As United States, Iran Tensions Escalate

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohamed, has ordered all commands and zones to be on red alert as it promises safety for all foreigners and Nigerians in the territory.
The police said this amidst growing fear of an impending war between Iran and the United States.
Adamu, in a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, directed all commands and formations to be on red alert.
He also said that all Zonal AIGs and Command Commissioners of Police must ensure maximum surveillance and security of lives and property across the nation.
He said, “This proactive measure follows intelligence report that sequel to the recent killing of an Iranian General; some domestic interests are planning to embark on massive public disturbances and sabotage.
“The police commanders have been directed to ensure strategic deployments of both overt and covert operatives to ensure adequate security and safety of citizens, foreigners especially diplomats and diplomatic missions domiciled in Nigeria as well as the protection of critical national assets.
“Meanwhile, the IGP has assured all Nigerians and foreigners resident in Nigeria of adequate security. “He has equally warned all potential troublemakers to steer clear of the streets and territory of Nigeria.”
The position of Nigeria’s police boss comes amidst growing cases of robbery, kidnapping and gang violence all across the country.
Due to the agency’s inability to live up to its statutory responsibility of stemming crime, the military in Nigeria has often been deployed to quell public unrest and threats to societal security.
In addition, the police in Nigeria is known for corruption, human rights violation and gross incompetence.

Soldiers Forcefully Evict Another Lagos Waterside Community

Personnel of the Nigerian Army have forcefully evicted residents of Ilase waterfront community in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos.
This is coming about two weeks after officials of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force destroyed more than 2,500 illegal structures at Marwa Waterside in Lekki.
The Lagos State Government has come under criticism for forcefully evicting residents and selling the lands to rich people for development.
Ilase residents were stunned on Sunday morning when soldiers drove in and began to send people out of their homes.

Residents of the community, who spoke with our correspondent, said they were harassed and assaulted by the soldiers.
“When they came in, they began to beat and forced us to pack our belongings out of the houses.

“They said they were working on directives and nobody would be allowed to remain in the community,” a resident said.
The affected persons stated that they were not given eviction notice by the government before the invasion by the soldiers.

As at the time of filling this report, residents were still packing out of their homes in the community.

Hackers Loyal To Iran Attack Website Operated By United States Government In Response To Killing Of Military Chief

DailyMail

A group claiming to represent the Government of Iran has hacked a website operated by the United State Government, according to a report by Daily Mail UK.
The website operated by the little-known Federal Depository Library Program, fdlp.gov, was hacked and defaced on Saturday, and has been taken offline.
A message from the hackers left on the website read, “In the name of god. Hacked By Iran Cyber Security Group Hackers. This is only small part of Iran’s cyber ability! We’re always ready.”
The FDLP is a program created to make government’s publications available to the public at no cost.
Security experts have already warned that cyber attacks could be part of Iran’s retaliation for the U.S. airstrike on Friday that killed Revolutionary Guard General, Qassem Soleimani, a top official in Iran.
Iran’s state-backed hackers are among the world’s most aggressive and could inject malware that triggers major disruptions to America’s public and private sectors.

United States Sends 3,000 Soldiers To Middle East Amidst Rising Tension With Iran

The United States has dispatched 3,000 soldiers to the Middle East as tension between America and Iran rises over the killing of Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian military general.
Defense officials speaking on condition of anonymity announced the decision, adding that the troops are from the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
The 3,000 military personnel are in addition to about 700 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne deployed to Kuwait earlier this week after the attack on US Embassy compound in Baghdad, Iraq, according to Daily Mail UK.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly called for withdrawing from Syria and Afghanistan, but over the past year he has greatly increased U.S. troop in the Middle East.
“At the direction of the Commander in Chief, I have authorised the deployment of an infantry battalion from the Immediate Response Force of the 82nd Airborne Division to the U.S. Central Command area of operations in response to recent events in Iraq,” Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper, said in a statement.

United Kingdom Prime Minister, Johnson, Not Given Prior Notice Before U.S Killed Iranian General

Prime Minister of United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, did not receive any prior notification from United States officials before the airstrike that killed Iranian military general, Qassem Soleimani, on Friday.
According to a report by Daily Mail UK, Johnson was on holiday with his girlfriend, Carrie Symonds, in Mustique – a private island in West Indies – when he received news of the incident.
Following the development, the British PM is said to have headed back to the UK so as to be fully briefed by senior government officials ahead of making a statement.
Johnson is said to be likely greeted by Sir Mark Sedwill, the National Security Adviser, who has been locked in meetings with heads of UK intelligence agencies on potential risks to ships and citizens in the Middle East.
The killing of Soleimani has since escalated tensions in the Middle East with Iran vowing to “respond in a strong way” over the situation.

E2%80%9Cterrorist%E2%80%9D-over-killing-military-chief Iran Brands United States President, Donald Trump, “Terrorist” Over Killing Of Military Chief

Iran has labelled United States President, Donald Trump, a terrorist following America’s killing of a top Iranian military general, Qassem Soleimani, in an airstrike in Baghdad, Iraq, on Friday.
Speaking on Sunday in Tehran, Iran’s capital, Member of Parliament, Abolfazl Abutorabi, said that they had the capacity to attack the White House – America’s seat of power – and would respond strongly at the appropriate time.
He said, “Trump is a terrorist in a suit. We can attack the White House itself, we can respond to them on the American soil.
“We have the power, and God willing we will respond in an appropriate time.”
On Saturday, Revolutionary Guards commander, Major General Hossein Salami, promised “a strategic revenge which will definitely put an end to the US presence in the region”.
Trump had earlier threatened to hit 52 critical targets in Iran in retaliation if the Arabian country strikes any American interests in the region.
He said, “The United States just spent $2trn on military equipment. We are the biggest and by far the best in the world!
“If Iran attacks an American base or any American, we will be sending some of that brand new beautiful equipment their way and without hesitation.”

Christian Group Kicks Against Planned Withdrawal Of Troops In North-East Nigeria

The Christian Association of Nigeria has kicked against the planned withdrawal of troops from troubled regions by the Nigerian Government.
President of the organisation, Supo Ayokunle, expressed the body’s disagreement with the plan on Sunday in Yola, Adamawa State, while inaugurating a N115m secretariat of the association, describing it as a “policy somersault”.
He said, “I call on President Muhammadu Buhari to abandon his planned withdrawal of troops from troubled regions. I see it as a policy somersault.”
Chairman of CAN in the state, Stephen Mamza, while lauding government’s efforts in the fight against insurgency, urged the military to do more.
The Nigerian Government had on December 30, 2019 expressed readiness to gradually withdraw troops from the country’s North-East region where Boko Haram terrorists have sustained a deadly attack on civilian and military targets for almost a decade.
The government said the move was to allow the police and other law enforcement agencies take control of security in such places.
However, the plan has been opposed by several sections of the society including state governors, who have told President Muhammadu Buhari to suspend the plan.

Al-Shabaab Jihadists Attack US-Kenyan Military Base

Jihadists from Somalia’s Al-Shabaab group on Sunday attacked a military base used by United States and Kenyan forces in Kenya’s coastal Lamu region, a government official said.
“There was an attack but they have been repulsed,” Lamu Commissioner, Irungu Macharia, told AFP.
He said the attack took place before dawn at the base known as Camp Simba, and that “a security operation is ongoing”, without saying if there had been casualties.
“We are not sure if there are still remnants within,” he said.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, saying they had “successfully stormed the heavily fortified military base and have now taken effective control of part of the base.”
The group said there had been both Kenyan and American casualties, however this could not be immediately verified.
Al-Shabaab said the attack was part of its “Al-Quds (Jerusalem) shall never be Judaised” campaign — a term it first used during an attack on the upscale Dusit hotel complex in Nairobi in January last year that left 21 people dead.
