Kankara: Education Under Attack In Northern Nigeria – Amnesty International

Amnesty International has strongly condemned Friday’s attack on Government Science Secondary School in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State and the abduction of over five hundred boys by Boko Haram Terrorists.
Osai Ojigho, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, in a statement on Tuesday, said the abducted students risk being harmed or being forced to become child soldiers.

According to the human rights watchdog group, most students in Northern Nigeria had abandoned their education after being displaced by frequent violent attacks on their communities, and many teachers have been forced to flee to other states.

“Katsina Abduction Was Done To Discourage Western Education” – B’Haram Claims Responsibility In New Audio

The statement read, “We condemn this appalling attack, which is the latest in a string of grave human rights abuses by Boko Haram. Since 2012, hundreds of teachers, schoolchildren and students have been killed or wounded by Boko Haram, and thousands of children have been abducted.
“Attacks on schools and abduction of children are war crimes. Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for several attacks on schools in the past and must be brought to justice for these and other human rights abuses.
“These children are abducted in serious risk of being harmed and being forced to become child soldiers. Nigerian authorities must take all measures to return them to safety, along with all children currently under the custody of Boko Haram.
“Education is under attack in northern Nigeria. Schools should be places of safety, and no child should have to choose between their education and their life. Other children have had to abandon their education after being displaced by frequent violent attacks on their communities, and many teachers have been forced to flee to other states. The Nigerian authorities must act immediately to prevent attacks on schools, to protect children’s lives and their right to education.
“The protection of children’s lives is paramount, and the Nigerian government has to ensure that Boko Haram and other armed groups do not further threaten the country’s educational sector.
“The attack on Government Science Secondary School, Kankara is a serious violation of international humanitarian law, and it undermines the right to education for thousands of children in northern Nigeria. The abduction of students and the destruction of school property by Boko Haram can severely reduce the availability of and access to education for many children in northern Nigeria where violent attacks are escalating.”

E2%80%94ganduje Why I Sacked Sanusi—Ganduje

Kano Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, has said he sacked Muhammadu Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano to save the system and the traditional institution from abuse.
The governor had, on March 09, 2020, dethroned Sanusi, a vocal advocate of reforms in Northern Nigeria.

Kano Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Many see the action as Ganduje’s way of getting at the deposed Emir who is believed to have worked against his re-election during the 2019 election.
Speaking during the presentation of a book authored by a journalist, Bonaventure Philips Melah, on former President Goodluck Jonathan, the governor said Sanusi was not the best man for the throne at the time he was appointed in June 2014.
He said the former Emir was appointed to spite Jonathan.

BREAKING: Emir Of Kano, Sanusi, Dethroned

The former President had in April 2014, sacked Sanusi as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over claims that $49 billion was stolen by some persons under Jonathan’s administration. He said, “Sanusi was appointed Emir of Kano not because he was the best man for the throne but to retaliate what Jonathan did to him.“That was to prove that what Jonathan did to him was wrong and that the people of Kano wanted their son as Emir and therefore they decided to appoint him as Emir.“But when he was appointed, there was a lot of demonstration with people burning tyres here and there. But because of government backing, he was sustained on the stool.“When I became governor, (that’s why you will laugh), I said yes, Jonathan medicine is an important medicine.“That medicine, even though I am not a medical doctor, would serve the same purpose, for the same disease and the same patient.“So, I took my Jonathan medicine and decided to save the system, to save the institution, and I applied it effectively. So Jonathan and I are on the same page. I have no regrets.”

Nigerian Government Orders Telcos To Disconnect SIM Not Synchronized With NIN

The Federal Government of Nigeria has directed all network operators to disconnect every SIM card not synchronized with the valid National Identity Number by December 30, 2020.
The order was issued after an urgent meeting of key stakeholders in the communications industry convened by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, on Monday.

The meeting in its resolution insisted that all telecom operators must require all their subscribers to provide valid NIN to update SIM registration records as from December 16.
This development comes on the heels of an earlier directive suspending new SIM registration by network operators across the country.

Governor Ben Ayade

It was gathered that he was attacked while waiting for his wife to pick him up after the bus he was travelling in, broke down.
A police source told SaharaReporters that the late Edum’s belongings were found on Utomobong and his gang members.
Utomobong, who is notorious for freely extorting money from residents of the state and inflicting pains on anyone standing in his way, was said to be untouchable because of his closeness to Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State.

His notoriety is well known to law enforcement agencies in the state. He is also alleged to be responsible for the killing of one Ebenezer Ika in April 2018.
According to the source, Utomobong and his gang did not know that Edum was a policeman and the deputy governor’s nephew.
The source said, “The man’s belongings were found on Kingsley and his gang members. They did not know that he was a policeman or the deputy governor’s nephew,” the source said.
“The ACP travelled by road to Calabar and made friends with one lawyer on the bus. Nobody knew he was a police officer until they reached Calabar and the bus broke down at 8 Miles by the highway.
“He then called his wife and gave her his location to come and pick him. I don’t know why he left where the other passengers were or why his weapon as a policeman was not handy when he moved from where everyone was standing.
“He then strolled forward with his lawyer friend and that was how Kingsley and his gang waylaid them. They were both asked to hand over their bags. The lawyer complied, but the ACP refused and held on to his bag. They then hacked his wrist, probably to get him to release the bag. He bled to death.
“When his wife arrived and saw him bleeding, she panicked and drove into a gutter in shock. It was after he died that the information was released that his mother is the deputy governor’s younger sister.
“This Kingsley has been an untouchable terrorist until he inadvertently hit close to home. You see how the government can work when it affects them?”

Katsina Abduction: BBOG Movement Seeks US Intervention, Sack Of Service Chiefs

The #BringBackOurGirls Movement has demanded the rescue of the 333 abducted schoolboys from the Government Science Secondary School in Katsina State by the Nigerian government.
The BBOG said in a statement on Tuesday that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government had been indecisive about the rescue of the schoolboys the same way it did about the remaining Chibok schoolgirls of 2014 and Leah Sharibu, the remaining Dapchi schoolgirl abducted in 2015.

In the statement signed by Oby Ezekwesili, Aisha Yesufu and other members of the group, the BBOG also demanded the “immediate sack of the service chiefs and the review of the security architecture of the country given the rising cases of insecurity and banditry.”
BBOG said, “We ask the Federal Government to seek support from regional and international stakeholders, especially the United States, to deploy the same security prowess used in the rescue of one American citizen so that we can win this war against terrorism and banditry with their support.
“As a movement, we will continue to monitor events and respond accordingly. Using our children as pawns in this game of failed leadership must stop now. The first 48 hours are crucial in the rescue of abductees. Three days after the abduction of the #KankaraBoys, the window of successful and timely rescue becomes increasingly difficult.
“The lack of urgency by both state and the federal government is disturbing; how much longer do parents have to grieve over the unknown whereabouts of the children they sent to school?
“Characteristic of the federal government of Nigeria, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has yet again failed the #KankaraBoys. The continuation of the seemingly endless nightmare of the string of school-children abductions including, the 112 #ChibokGirls, and #LeahSharibu still unaccounted for is unacceptable while the Buhari-led government continues to play the role of an ostrich with the security and lives of citizens.
“Has President Buhari not learned anything about securing our children in the theatre of war? His indifference to the plight of citizens is the trademark of the failed leadership of his administration.”
The group added, “We are dismayed by the back-and-forth between the state and the federal government over the actual number of schoolboys abducted. We do not want to see another Chibok where days and weeks passed while the inaction and delays of the Goodluck Jonathan government led to a prolonged abduction that is yet to be resolved today.”
The BBOG noted that utterly distasteful was the fact that the President was on the ground in Katsina state and did not deem it fit to meet the disconsolate parents.
“We demand immediate action of rescue using all resources at the disposal of the government to bring back #KankaraBoys, #LeahSharibu, and #ChibokGirls; direct communication with the parents of the abducted boys about the efforts made and a commitment to rescue their children; immediate sack of the service chiefs and the review of the security architecture of the country given the rising cases of insecurity and banditry.”

Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari.

A lot of reactions from Nigerians have continued to trail SaharaReporters’ exclusive report that First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has relocated to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates for over three months, citing insecurity at the Aso Rock Villa.
Most commentators knocked the First Lady for absconding from the country and lavishing taxpayers’ money on foreign trips. Many people wondered where average Nigerians who are daily facing the heat of insecurity should run to.

Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari.

SaharaReporters had on Tuesday reported that Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari, had been in Dubai since September after the wedding of her daughter, Hanan, and she had therefore not been involved in any government activity.
The First Lady is not in a hurry to return, despite spending over three months, as she reportedly stated that the Aso Rock Villa was not secure for her family.
The security concern was fuelled a shooting incident which occurred in June and caused some panic among occupants of the Villa.A top source told SaharaReporters on Tuesday that the First Lady had now relocated quietly to the UAE for over three months.

“Aisha Buhari has relocated quietly to Dubai. She has been travelling even before the daughter’s wedding. For three months now, she has been there. She cited insecurity in the Villa after that shooting incident,” the source had said.
On Twitter, many Nigerians expressed fears over the rising insecurity, wondering where else would be safe if Aso Rock Villa was not.Aisha Buhari doesn’t feel safe at the Villa.. she had to relocate to Dubai. A First Lady that doesn’t feel safe in her own country. This country is messed up mehn… From one sad news to another.— Helen Ozor (@Realhelenozor) December 15, 2020

Miliki first lady has travelled to enjoy herself at the expense of the taxpayers in the Country. If she travelled based on alleged insecurity in Aso Rock, what does she expect the citizens living in fear to say? It’s not her fault, blame those who voted for PMB in 2015 & 2019.— White Amadasun (@WhiteAmadasun) December 15, 2020

The rich up north, have either relocated to Abuja or overseas, you now ask, what is the fate of poor Nigerians who don’t have money to relocate anywhere?!!— Umenta Braith (MD,GS (IV)) (@umenta) December 15, 2020

I sha know one day, one day, the truth would be revealed, as you can’t hide a thing forever. No doubt, something is fishy in that family. Samuel Oladipo @SamuelOladipo8 wonders why the first lady will leave the country when she is part of the problems of the country, “After setting the country on fire economically, security-wise etc. and causing human blood to flow like water and properties destroyed, relocation to a safe country with the South’s resources is their next move. The God of vengeance is alive to take vengeance and rain His anger like fire.”
