International Press Center Releases Media Advisory For Journalists Covering COVID-19 In Nigeria

The International Press Center, Lagos, has launched a media advisory for journalists reporting the COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria.
Executive Director of IPC, Mr Lanre Arogundade, said journalists disseminating information to help combat the pandemic were being exposed to health and security risks, which must be addressed through diverse means.
Noting that journalists covering a pandemic for the first time needed as much professional support as possible, Arogundade said the advisory became necessary as the COVID-19 infection was spreading to more states and all journalists, whether on the field or not, should benefit from relevant knowledge.
He said, “It is against this background that the advisory is divided into three parts – safety, ethics and professionalism and social responsibility.
“The advisory derives from and complements existing national, regional and media standards for crisis reporting.”
The IPC Director said the release of the advisory would be followed by capacity trainings for journalists in partnership with other media and communication professional bodies in the next couple of days.
He added, “The trainings would enable journalists to share information and ask questions based on their experience on the field and in turn receive more professional support.
“Journalists should maintain and observe the minimum prescription for social distancing and body contact as recommended by the relevant health authorities.
“Journalists should ensure all equipment, camera, microphone cover, midget, etc, are thoroughly disinfected and decontaminated at the end of every assignment.
“Persons responsible for handling the equipment should be made fully aware in advance and trained on how to safely clean the equipment.”

EXCLUSIVE: Yobe Governor, Buni, Purchases N600m Luxury Vehicles For 14 Emirs Despite Public School Pupils Learning In Classrooms With Leaky Roof

Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, has purchased Sports Utility Vehicles worth N600m for some traditional rulers in the state, SaharaReporters can confirm.
Buni, who gifted 14 emirs one of the vehicles and a bus each, is owing retired civil servants in the state gratuities running into several billions of naira.
Yobe State has one of the highest poverty rates in Nigeria with 2.2 million people out of its 2.3 million residents living below $1 – N360 – per day.

The literacy level in the state, which stands at 24.3 per cent, is one of the lowest in the country according to figures from the National Bureau of Statistics.
SaharaReporters gathered that instead of fixing the abysmal educational system in the state or compensating retired civil servants, Governor Buni went on the spending spree for the traditional rulers to reward them for convincing their subjects to vote him into power.

“Look at Government Day Secondary School, Gashua, under Bade Local Government Area for example, the children sit on the floor for lessons while the roof is almost collapsing on their heads,” a state official told SaharaReporters.
Some lawmakers from Yobe, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said the action of the governor was slowing down governance in the state.

“People are dying, things are not going well. We want the governor to re-evaluate his decisions and prioritize the people,” one of the lawmakers said.

Magistrate Defies NJC, Holds Court Session To Remand Lawyer, Client In Adamawa

A Magistrate Court in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, has defied the National Judicial Council’s order for courts to shut down across the country during the Coronavirus period.
Magistrate Dimas Gwama of Court IV, Yola, on Wednesday held a session to consider an ex-parte application to detain a lawyer, his client and one other person.
The trio, who had been on bail since last Saturday, were brought before the court on charges of terrorism, forgery and conspiracy to cause violence.
During the session, the Adamawa State Police Commissioner prayed the court for an order to remand the defendants in custody.
Relying on section 294 of the Adamawa State Administration of Criminal Justice law, the prosecution asked the court to remand three men in prison custody.
Counsel to the defendants, Jerry Owe, however, challenged the application on grounds of incompetence.
He said, “This charge was brought under ex-parte application, which permits the police to bring a person to court; apply that the person should be remanded in prison custody.
“Usually under this section of the law, the defendants and or their counsel, don’t have a right of audience.
“But the court went beyond and took the plea of the defendants contrary to law, and by so doing, you have granted them a right of audience.
“Since the plea was taken before we arrived as their counsels, we now tried to explain to the court that they now have a right to be heard.
“Even if we do not have a right of audience as defence counsel, being lawyers, we can draw the attention of the court at any time when a law had not been complied with.
“However, the court in its wisdom went ahead and remanded them in police custody.”
Commenting on the action of the court, another lawyer, Gabriel Akpanamasi, also faulted the remand order.
He said, “Besides flouting the orders of NJC to shut down courts till April 20, 2020, this kind of remand order is sought for from places where there is no court of competent jurisdiction.”
Reacting, Dr Umar Ardo, who is a former aide to former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, described the move as political victimisation.
He said, “The magistrate is being used by the Adamawa State Government as a pawn in its political chess game.
“For that, we are going to write a petition to the NJC on the magistrate who had exercised this injustice on us.
“And we are also going to write a petition before the Inspector General of Police against the police commissioner for being a pawn in the political chess game of the Adamawa State Government.”
