Nigerians React To Low Turnout In Lagos Bye-Election
avalondaily
There was a low voter turnout on Saturday in Lagos State in the areas where the Lagos-East Senatorial District and Kosofe Constituency bye-elections took place.
SaharaReporters gathered several polling units were deserted.

This is the first election that would be taking place in Lagos since the #EndSARS protest.
The development has led to mixed reactions on Twitter as Nigerians debated the low turnout.
Most youths explained that their reason for not voting was because the Peoples Democratic Party as well as the All Progressives Congress – the two major parties – are birds of the same feather.
Both APC and PDP are same set of people changing colour of agbada, we have both their records of failure, and SORO SOKE generation will not partake in electing further failure. We want total haulage come 2023.— Komolafe (@Komolaf11233521) December 5, 2020
Senator Jaywon @juuwoncares gave the excuse of location as his inability to vote. He asked, “How can I vote when I need to travel to my polling unit to cast my vote?” How can I vote when I need to travel to my polling unit to cast my vote— SENATOR JAYWON (@juuwoncares) December 5, 2020
Lionheart @lion__heart01 said the youth could not fully partake in the election because their political party has yet to be registered. He tweeted, “Because their party isn’t ready yet! APC, PDP are the same, and we have lost hope in them.”Because their party isn’t ready yet!APC,PDP are the same and we have lost hope in them. pic.twitter.com/g6GqIRUHlF— lion 🦠heart (@lion__heart01) December 5, 2020

Some, however, think that the youth have no excuse for not participating in the election.
Fad|Loomsuite @smartkaybee replying @komolaf11233521, said, “So the way for the soro soke to take over is by protest or burning right? Youth needs to be directly involved in politics. Another in this school of thought, Rt. Hon. Olanrewaju Solomon, tweeted, “They can never be at their polling units but on the Internet casting their vote… it’s a pity for SORO SOKE GENERATION sha… The government will create an opportunity for them, they will not make use of it, but in the end, they will be complaining of bad government… No sense.” They can never be at their polling units but on the Internet casting their vote…it’s a pity for SORO SOKE GENERATION sha… Government will create an opportunity for them, they will not make use of it but at the end they will be complaining of bad government… No sense.🙄🙄🙄— Rt.Hon. Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, who cast his ballot at Ward 4 Unit 002 at Oke-Balogun Central Mosque, Epe commended the peaceful conduct of voters at his unit.
The PDP candidate in Lagos-East, Babatunde Gbadamosi, complained about the low voter turnout, blaming it on the failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission to educate voters properly.

#EndSARS: Nobody Died At Lekki, Those Who Claimed They Saw Corpses Have Eye Problem, Says Buratai
Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, has insisted that nobody was killed during the #EndSARS protest at Lekki toll gate in Lagos State on October 20.
Buratai said those claiming protesters were killed were seeing “double.”
Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai.
Hours before a curfew was scheduled to begin, soldiers had stormed the Lekki toll gate on October 20 where protesters had gathered and started shooting, killing an unconfirmed number of people.
The incident has received widespread condemnation within and outside Nigeria.
Speaking on Friday at the decoration of 39 newly promoted Major-Generals, Buratai maintained that there was no corpse during the shooting at the toll gate.
He said, “I am glad that we held the Spiritual Warfare Seminar on Wednesday and most of the decorated Generals today are graduates of the Spiritual Warfare Seminar.
“I must say that the spiritual warfare seminar we had last time helped us during the last #EndSARS protest to the extent that there was no single corpse, but some persons saw double at Lekki toll gate in Lagos State.
“We will continue to protect every law-abiding Nigerian anywhere in the country, and we will do that in accordance with the rules of engagement and confines of the constitution.”
Despite Buratai’s self-righteous claims, the army has been giving self-indicting explanations before a sitting Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry investigating the Lekki incident.
The army had initially explained that it used only blank ammunition at the scene of the protests, but following a CNN investigation which exposed that expended Serbian bullets purchased by the army were found at the location, the military gave another explanation.

The Commander of the 81 Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island, Lagos, formerly Brig-Gen Ahmed Taiwo, had led the army’s desperate attempt to cover up its tracks.
Taiwo later explained on November 22 before the panel that the Phase Four of the military internal security operation, which was deployed at the Lekki tollgate on the night October 20, involved the use of both live and blank ammunition.
He said the soldiers took live bullets to the scene for self-defence.
Taiwo said the troops that operated at the tollgate on that night were indeed armed with live bullets. He, however, maintained that only soldiers with blank bullets fired shots into the air.

Unity Of Nigeria Questionable, Jonathan Says
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said the nation’s unity is questionable.
He observed that the youths in the country prefer to identify with regional affiliations than a national body.
He said this during a command performance by the Commonwealth Community Choir tagged ‘Peace for All Nations’ at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, on Friday, Punch reports.
He said, “I was discussing with somebody, and I said ‘look, in Nigeria, the youths appear not even to have a national youth body, because in most cases, the regional youth bodies are stronger than the national youth body.
“Ordinarily, the national youth body is supposed to be stronger than the regional youth body. If you go to my state, Bayelsa State for example, if I am a national member of the Nigerian Youth Council, the IYC, Ijaw Youth Council, feels that they are your boss.
“If you go to the Southwest and the North, the Arewa Youth Group feel they are superior to the national youth body.
“If you go to the Southwest, the same thing. If you go to the Southeast, the same thing. That shows clearly that as a nation, we are in trouble. The unity of the country is questionable.”
Commenting on the event, Jonathan further said, “So, when you see young people come together to perform with the theme: ‘Peace for All Nations,’ I am quite impressed.”
Asked to comment on the way forward regarding the insecurity plaguing the country, Jonathan said Nigeria was not the only nation affected by insecurity, adding that the whole world was facing insecurity because of the excesses of terrorists.
He said the Nigerian situation was somehow unique as the country feels it every day, even as he said he believed the government was doing its best.
“I was there before and of course, you know there was a lot of insecurity. So, I am the very wrong person to make comments on the insecurity in the land.
“All that we can do is to support the government collectively, encourage the soldiers and other security operatives to do more for our safety,” Jonathan stated.
Also speaking, Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, said nothing could be more important than peace.
Osinbajo, who was represented by his Special Assistant on Religious Matters, Pastor Seyi Malomo, further said peace in the society is one of the invincible cement that makes everything to work.
“If you remove that peace, everything will somehow collapse. So, peace cannot be coming at a more appropriate time when we are in the season of celebrating our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who the Bible says is the Prince of Peace,” Osinbajo said.

Insecurity: 150 CSOs Vow To Occupy National Assembly
A group, Coalition of 150 Organisations Against Insecurity, has said it will begin the #SecureNorth protest at the National Assembly over the wave of insecurity in the northern region on December 10.
According to the group, the plan is aimed at drawing the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari, who it said, will appear before the House of Representatives on December 10 or 15.
The lower legislative chamber of the National Assembly had during the week invited the President over incessant killings across the country.
The group said that over 150,000 citizens had been mobilised to storm the National Assembly.
“This is a call to all Nigerians to join the #SecureNorth peaceful protest against the poor level of insecurity in the country and call to actions against the spate of killings and kidnappings in the North and any other part of Nigeria. We shall be occupying the three-arm zones for days until all our demands are met.
“All civil society organisations, unions, associations, professional bodies, and so on are invited. This is a special invitation to all local and international media.
“Let us honour the souls of the poor farmers in Borno and Katsina states and any other victim of insecurity in Nigeria. Let us all come out to add our voices to the call to end insecurity in Nigeria.”

Delta Commissioner Orders Arrest Of 12 Nurses As Government Threatens Striking Health Workers
The Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr Mordi Ononye, has allegedly ordered the arrest of at least 12 health workers who are members of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, currently on strike.
SaharaReporters learnt from a source that the government vowed to intimidate members of the NANNM to coerce them into suspending their strike action, rather than addressing the five-point demands of the health union.
The NANNM demanded that the government should look into: one, the demotion of principals of Nursing and Midwifery Schools; two, the imposition of a junior nursing officer as the director of nursing services; three, the non-implementation of nurses that were laterally transferred to the Ministry of Health.
Others include the implementation of License Community Nursing and Midwifery; volunteer nursing recruitment instead of actual recruitment, the general members’ welfare, including promotions, arrears and uniform allowance.
Speaking with SaharaReporters, one of the nurses said, “The Commissioner arrested our members. The total arrested members are now 12. I cannot disclose the names of the arrested. The government will use it to witch-hunt them later. That was what they did to the principals.”
The government had earlier in a circular dated December 3 threatened to punish any nurse or midwife in the service of the state who embarked on a strike action to protest against demotion, poor welfare and allowances.
The state Ministry of Health, Asaba, issued the threat in a circular, marked, HNC3/T/15, to all principal state schools of nursing and other government centres where the nurses and midwives were domiciled.
In the letter obtained by SaharaReporters, the state government, instead of implementing the demands of the health workers, threatened to deal with any nurse or midwife who “flouts this directive” according to the rule of engagement and extant provisions.

Nurses, Midwives Begin Indefinite Strike In Delta
0 Comments
SaharaReporters gathered that the health workers commenced their strike on Thursday, based on a five-point demand.
The NANNM directed its unit chairmen and secretaries to ask workers to embark on an indefinite strike on Thursday.
SaharaReporters obtained the circular, which was signed by the NANNM State Secretary, Mr David Ezugwu.
The circular, titled, “State-Wide Strike”, reads, “Sequel to the resolutions adopted by the state executive council and the unwillingness of the Delta State Ministry of Health to heed to our association’s requests as contained in the 14-day ultimatum to the Delta State Government, and other correspondences to the office of the Commissioner for Health, I have the directive to make the following communication to you:
“One, you are by this letter asked to make the final preparation and mobilisation of all members in your unit for the commencement of a state-wide indefinite strike by all nurses and midwives in Delta State.
“Two, there shall be no room for any skeletal services by any of our members in your unit throughout the pendency of the strike.
“Three; that the strike will not be called off until our demands are met. Four, that all our nurses and midwives in your unit are by this communication directed to commence the indefinite strike by 12midnight of December 3.”
But in the government circular, also obtained by SaharaReporters and signed by one Mrs C.I. Nwodi for the health commissioner, the state government, instead of addressing the demands, threatened to deal with the health workers.
This has now led to the arrest of at least 12 members of the health union.
