BREAKING: Convoy Of Ondo Governor, Akeredolu, Kills Man In Owo

The convoy of Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has killed a middle-age man in Owo area of the state.
SaharaReporters learnt that a driver in the convoy of the governor on high speed rammed into the man and crushed him to death.
Sources confirmed that the victim was a close relation to Mr Bob Aladeniyi, a popular musician in Owo town.
It was gathered that the accident occurred around 8:30pm on Sunday close to a technical college near Akeredolu’s campaign office in Owo.
SaharaReporters gathered that the governor was coming from Oka Akoko and heading to Akure, the state capital, when the incident occurred.
The source said, “The governor was coming from Akoko where he went to receive some new members of APC when his convoy caused the accident.
“The victim died on the spot and the governor’s convoy had to speed off with his crew to Akure while the people were shouting.
“The people had to block the road this night to show their grievances over the incident.”

EXCLUSIVE: Coronavirus: Nigerian Churches Ignore Basic Precautionary Measures, Leave Protection Of Worshippers In ‘Hands Of Holy Spirit’

Despite major events including religious programmes being cancelled and or safety and precautionary measures being improved to keep such alive around the world following the outbreak of Coronavirus, Nigerian religious movements, especially churches, have gone on with their businesses as usual without blinking an eyelid.
A yet to be identified Italian had brought in the deadly virus into Nigeria on February 24, 2020, coming in contact with several persons in Ogun and Lagos, thereby increasing chances of a further spread of the disease in the country.
As a result of the situation, Nigeria’s Ministry of Health advised individuals and organisations to embrace a number of hygiene measures including regular washing of hands with soap and water, applying alcohol-based hand sanitisers, avoiding places lacking proper ventilation, wearing nose masks in crowded places in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
The Christian Association of Nigeria in a statement earlier supported that call by admonishing churches to embrace all safety measures as possible to prevent spread of the virus.
However, during visits to major churches in some Nigerian cities on Sunday including Lagos, Abuja and Jos in Plateau State, SaharaReporters correspondents observed how the most basic of the precautionary items recommended by health experts to prevent against the spread of the virus were missing in such places.
For example, at the headquarters of Love World Christian Centre popularly known as Christ Embassy in Oregun, Lagos, one of our correspondents observed how members hugged and shook hands with each other without observing any of the protective measures advised by health experts.
Though there were two giant metal detectors at the entry and exit points of the church, our correspondent saw no hand sanitiser despite moving round the facility for several minutes.
Also at the Household of God Church a few metres away from Christ Embassy at Oregun, there was nothing to suggest that the religious organisation was taking precautionary measures against the spread of the deadly virus by putting hand sanitisers and other related items at strategic points within the facility.
But every worshipper had their bags and other personal belongings thoroughly scanned by security officials at the church before being allowed into the auditorium for Sunday service.
However, at Daystar Christian Centre on Ikosi Road, Oregun, Lagos, SaharaReporters observed that safety measures had been adhered to by the church as a hand sanitiser dispenser had been placed at the entrance of the auditorium.
Ushers were seen reminding and encouraging worshippers to disinfect their hands before going into the auditorium for Sunday service.
But at the Latter House Christian Center in Jos, Plateau State, worshippers were observed hugging and shaking hands freely while no protective item was seen anywhere near sight.
A pastor in the church, Sarah Amana, told SaharaReporters that the ‘Holy Communion’ served to members was enough protection against any type of virus.
She said, “There’s nothing like hand sanitisers here before one enters the church. Nothing has changed, we still give communion the same way.
“We are not afraid of any virus, the Holy Communion is prevention against it.”
Corroborating the pastor’s position, a member of the church named Nangi Aaron told SaharaReporters that things had been going on as usual at the place despite Coronavirus being imported into the country.
She said, “It’s been the way it used to be, nothing has changed. There are no hand sanitisers in the church.”
At St. Stevens Church in Bukuru, another part of Jos, where basic precautionary items were missing, members expressed belief that the ‘Holy Spirit’ had their backs against Coronavirus or any other type of diseases.
Micheal Kawu, a chorister in the church, said, “As much as we want to be careful, our trust is in God.
“We know that He will always put the mark of exemption on His own. We are confident that He will see us through just like He did when Ebola came into the country.”
In was the same story in churches visited in Abuja by one of our correspondents on Sunday.
For instance, during a visit to St. Luke Catholic Church in Kubwa, Abuja, by one of our correspondents, parishioners were seen trooping into the church auditorium without first sanitising their hands.
It was a similar scenario at the Assemblies of God Church in the area where worshippers went about their normal members with no preventive measure in place.
Speaking on the matter, Bayo Oladeji, Special Assistant on Media and Communications to CAN President, Supo Ayokunle, told SaharaReporters that some churches might ignore the safety measures because “Holy Spirit will protect them”.
He said, “There are churches that believe that once they pray against any evil, they will not be touched.
“Churches are open to Christians and non-Christians; if you say your members are spiritually protected, what about the non-members that come to worship with you?
“Our own is to direct, we cannot force them to do it. We appeal to all churches that have not complied with the directive to do so.”
On March 7, 2020, the Pope cancelled his Vatican addresses and held services via live stream for first time as a result of the outbreak and spread of Coronavirus.
The pontiff has also scrapped his Sunday speech to avoid crowds gathering to see him as a result of the situation.
Though first breaking out in Wuhan, China, Coronavirus has spread rapidly across the world, with Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Cameroon, Senegal, South Africa and Togo all recording cases of the disease in Africa.
The virus has killed over 3,800 persons from across 77 countries so far.

E2%80%99s-mother%E2%80%99s-90th-birthday-bash-dies Lead Singer Of Music Band Flown To Perform At Gbajabiamila’s Mother’s 90th Birthday Bash Dies In Dubai

Late Ejiro Emokinovo

Ejiro Emokinovo, lead vocalist of music group, Veentage Band, has died in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
She passed away after a surgery on Thursday, March 5, 2020.
Emokinovo had undergone the surgery shortly after registering an impressive performance during the lavish 90th birthday bash of Alhaja Lateefat Olufunke Gbajabiamila, mother of Nigeria’s Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.
The late vocalist and the rest of Veentage Band are among over 300 guests flown to Dubai by Gbajabiamila on public funds for the extravagant ceremony.
Recall that shortly after an exclusive story by SaharaReporters on March 2, 2020 revealing how Gbajabiamila had earmarked at least N500m for the elaborate ceremony, media aides to the Speaker swiftly debunked the report, claiming that only few family members were billed to attend the event.
However, with Emokinovo’s demise on Thursday and disclosure that Veentage Band performed at the birthday bash, it is now clear that dozens of persons, who found their ways to the ceremony had their entire expenses covered by Gbajabiamila.
According to a source, who witnessed the event, mobile telephone network was jammed at the venue of the ceremony to prevent guests from revealing identities of influential persons, who graced the occasion.

Late Ejiro Emokinovo

In the exclusive story of March 2, SaharaReporters had exposed how the fanfare and lavish celebration to mark the woman’s 90th birthday was expected to run from March 2 until March 10 in the glittering Arabian city.
Among guests expected to grace the occasion were some of Nigeria’s high and mighty including politicians living fat on public funds.
Reservations for guests was made at the Conrad Hilton Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, where the least room goes for $122 (N43,920) per night.
If calculated by 300 guests, the cost for hotel accommodation alone per night amounted to $36,600 (N13,176,000).
Calculated for the eight nights that guests will be housed at the hotel, the total comes to $292,800 (N105,408,000).

EXCLUSIVE: Speaker Of Nigeria’s House Of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, Takes 300 Guests To Dubai For Mother’s 90th Birthday On Public Funds

Findings by SaharaReporters revealed that the average price for round-trip flights from Nigeria to Dubai is currently $637 (N229,320).
When this is calculated for 300 guests, the total expenditure for airfare falls to N68,796,000.
A member of the planning team for the lavish celebration hinted SaharaReporters that some guests were booked for special and luxurious accommodation and that top personalities not slotted into private jets were booked for special seats on commercial airlines to Dubai.
Meanwhile, despite the denial of the Gbajabiamila camp over the squandering of public funds in this manner, tributes have continued to pour in for the late Veentage Band lead vocalist, Emokinovo.
Taking to his Instagram page to mourn the late singer, Desmond, her husband, said Thursday – the day she died – was the worst of his entire existence.
He said, “Dear Lord, You always answer any time we call. Why You chose not to answer yesterday remains a mystery.”
Leading entertainers and other prominent Nigerians are among persons, who have paid tribute to Emokinovo in various social media posts.
SaharaReporters gathered that efforts are currently ongoing to repatriate the musician’s body to Nigeria for burial.

E2%80%99s-unconstitutional-exclude-south-east-fruits-23bn-loan-aloy-ejimakor It’s Unconstitutional To Exclude South-East From Fruits Of $23bn Loan By Aloy Ejimakor

According to several credible news outlets, the South-East is excluded from the proceeds of, or the spending plan proposed for the $23bn foreign loan recently approved by the Nigerian Senate. That’s unconstitutional and wrong, to boot.
First, it’s mischievous to suggest that the loan was approved for the Federal Government. It’s not. Instead, the loan was, as a matter of law, approved for Nigeria or the Federation of Nigeria and the proceeds must be bound for the federation account, not the account of Federal Government.
If it’s the Senate that is characterizing the proceeds of this loan as belonging to the Federal Government alone, that too is unconstitutional. It’s not the Senate of the Federal Government but a Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or of the federation.
Second, it’s not the separate resources of the Federal Government that will be used in repaying the loan. It’s the resources of Nigeria or the Federation of Nigeria, particularly oil, of which a substantial portion comes from the South-East.
Third, loan or not, the $23bn should count as revenue (or proceeds) accruing to the Federation of Nigeria, not the Federal Government of Nigeria, which is merely a tier of the three tiers constituting the Federation of Nigeria. The states and the local governments are the other two tiers. They cannot be excluded from the till.
Fourth, Section 162(1) of the constitution provides that “The Federation shall maintain a special account to be called “the Federation Account” into which shall be paid all revenues collected by the Government of the Federation, except the proceeds from the personal income tax of the personnel of the armed forces of the Federation, the Nigeria Police Force, the ministry or department of government charged with responsibility for Foreign Affairs and the residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja”.
As can be seen from above, loans are not one of the ‘proceeds’ exempted from the Federation account. To be sure, the same constitution defined “revenue” at Section 162(10) by stating that “For the purpose of subsection (1) of this section, “revenue” means any income or return accruing to or derived by the Government of the Federation from any source and includes- (a) any receipt, however described, arising from the operation of any law…”.
As can easily be gleaned from the plain texts of above provisions, ‘loans’ can comfortably fall under the category of ‘any source’ or ‘any receipt’, howsoever described.
Further, Section 162(3) of the same constitution provides that “any amount standing to the credit of the Federation Account shall be distributed among the Federal and state governments and the local government councils in each state on such terms and in such manner as may be prescribed by the National Assembly”.
This mean that the constitution is concerned with any amount, which plain meaning is simply that loans are not excluded from amounts or monies ‘standing to the credit of the Federation Account’.
And the said ‘prescription of the National Assembly’ that the constitution strictly requires before such amounts are distributed was promulgated as an Act, known as “Allocation of Revenue (Federation Account, Etc) Act”.
Under this Act, the amount standing to the credit of the Federation shall be distributed as follows: Federal government – 52.68 percent, States – 26.72 percent, local governments – 20.60 percent, with 13 percent derivation revenue going to the oil producing states, of which South-East currently has 2 States.
It is pertinent to note that the ‘13 per cent derivation’ underscores the prime role oil plays in the revenue of the Federation of Nigeria. So, in the reckoning of how this loan is to be distributed or spent, Nigeria must be mindful of the unarguable fact that most (if not all) of the interest and the ultimate repayment of the principal will come from oil revenue generated from States that includes 2 South-Eastern states but excludes most of the States where a lion share of this loan is proposed to be spent.
Taken further, and as is surely the case in societies guided by ordinary fairness and justice, this loan should have been subject to a 13 per cent ‘first line charge’, to be distributed to the oil-producing states in the recognition that they will, to the exclusion of all other States, bear the entire brunt of repaying this loan.
To be sure, it is only after complying with the constitutional sharing formula that the Federal Government shall be free to spend its statutory share anywhere and anyhow it likes, and it may then decide to exclude the South-East, as it often does.

Irate Youth Attack Governor Uzodinma In Imo

Angry youth in Ohaji community in Imo State have vented their anger on the state governor, Hope Uzodinma, harassing and hurling insults at him.
The governor, who was to attend a function in the community, had to be immediately evacuated from the area by security operatives after the irate youth smashed the rear windshield of his official vehicle.
“Youths of Mmahu community upon sighting the governor’s convoy started shouting “Onye Oshi vote, Onye Oshi vote”.
“They were throwing bottles and weapons at the bulletproof SUV of the governor,” a source, who witnessed the incident, told Vanguard.
Uzodinma came into office after a Supreme Court judgment on January 14, 2020 sacked Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party as governor of Imo State.
Since that period, the state has witnessed all sorts of crisis with supporters of Uzodinma and Ihedioha breathing down each other’s throats.

Oshiomhole’s Political Immolation By Ozodinukwe Okenwa

SOC Okenwa

SOC Okenwa

The former Governor of Edo State and current National Chairman of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, is a dimunitive man of considerable intellectual staying power. He is as eloquent and provocative as any political animal in Nigeria desperate to make name for themselves by staying glued to the system that allows them unfettered access to the pinnacle of power and state resources. Oshiomhole, despite the occasional hubris that trails his leadership style, remains a small man with big heart, one who knows what he wants in his political career and how to get same by hook or by crook.
As the celebrated President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) decades ago during successive military dictatorships the Comrade in khaki made name for himself by fearlessly and vociferously defending the interest of workers. He clashed with the primitive dictators at the helm of our national affairs at different epochs. He was as uncompromising as he was relentless in his dogged campaign for better wages and working conditions for the Nigerian workers.
From labour unionism Oshiomhole ‘graduated’ to gubernatorial politics by seeking and obtaining governorship of his state of Edo. Having won the guber poll against all odds Oshiomhole was confronted with godfatherism as epitomised by the late Anthony Anenih. Without any fear but resolutely determined to leave a footprint on the sand of time he had battled the veteran politician defeating him and retiring him from active politics.
As executive Governor Oshiomhole waged another war with the Igbinedion wealthy family in Benin City refusing to be intimidated by money. In the end the Igbinedions were reminded that power commanded money and not otherwise. During his 8-year eventful reign I once encountered him at work one hot afternoon in Benin City. Visiting home on vacation I was driving along Mission Road by Dawson Road junction when I noticed a large crowd gathered around the popular Governor as he inspected a road rehabilitation project.
Indeed, Oshiomhole transformed Benin city infrastructurally and brought democracy dividends to the people. Overall, he performed creditably well even though his detractors (including his ex-Commissioners and Special Assistants) pointed to his high-handedness and corruption.
When the Comrade left the Edo State capital city upon the completion of his second mandate he was in sort of political limbo. Seeking surreptitiously to supplant the then unpopular ineffective APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, himself a former Governor of Edo state, Oshiomhole presented the positive image of a strong-willed leader, one capable of uniting the opposing forces within the ruling party and repositioning it for more electoral victories. But upon mounting the saddle he became more controversial than Oyegun he had sought spiritedly to displace.
He made enemies everywhere by his impetuous methods and tactics; he oversaw the grand manipulation that saw to the triumph of the APC in the presidential poll of last year. Managing the unmerited success, however, has since become problematic. The centre could no longer hold. Attacks were coming from different familiar and unfamiliar quarters.
Today Comrade Oshiomhole is embattled on all fronts– from Benin city to Abuja. He is, for all intents and purposes, a marked man. While his position of National Chairman of the APC is becoming more and more threatened with protesters calling for his resignation or deposition he made it clear after his recent meeting with President Buhari that only God could determine his fate. Last week in Abuja there were pro and anti-Oshiomhole demonstrations. The first group voiced out their opposition to his continuation as Chairman citing intra-party squabbles and post-electoral losses suffered thus far by the APC.
On the other hand, however, the next day, another group (obviously sponsored) staged a counter demonstration in support of the Comrade. Under his leadership, they had argued, the ruling party had made some electoral progress nationwide. Changing a ‘winning’ team, for the protesters, was counter-productive.
Besides, the battle to ease out Oshiomhole took another turn as litigations mounted. In one breath an FCT High Court in Jabi, Abuja ruled that the Comrade was hereby suspended asking him to stop parading himself as the party Chairman pending the final determination of the suit. But in another breath, hours after the verdict that ousted him, another court, a Federal High Court in Kano, set aside the earlier ruling from the FCT rehabilitating him and paving the way for him to continue in office.
Following the contradicting judicial pronouncements emanating from Abuja and Kano heavily-armed security forces are reportedly positioned at the APC national Secretariat preventing everyone from entering the premises. A notice of the emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting convened by the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Chief Victor Giadom, to resolve its ongoing intra-party leadership crisis had been denounced by other executive members describing same as a “mischief”. In a statement released recently some notable members dissociated themselves from the said “illegal and unauthorized Notice of Meeting” arguing strongly that Giadom had no powers to convene any NEC Meeting.
Back home in Edo State ‘Oshio-Baba’ is seeing ‘red’ everywhere! His attempts to play Anenih has hit the wall with the glorified ‘godson’ asserting his independent-mindedness and manifesting scorn for godfatherism. Governor Godwin Obaseki, given his pedigree, does not appear like a weakling to be ordered around or pushed aside. His gubernatorial swagger gives him away as a man in control of his inner elements and environment.
For the uninitiated Governor Obaseki is fighting the man that ‘made’ him. He could therefore be accused of betrayal or disloyalty. But no one was party to the gentlemen agreement the two must have signed prior to Oshiomhole throwing his weight behind the Obaseki guber ambition hence no one could say for sure what led to the ‘rofo-rofo’ fight. Suffice to say that we could hazard a guess by blaming ego or ‘ego’ (money in Igbo language) for their simmering irreconciliable differences.
However, all things considered, it appears that doing the right thing ought to take precedence over and above all considerations — material or financial. Let the right thing be done no matter whose ox is gored! If being on the side of the people is considered a ‘crime’ by the godfathers then ignoring their antics and/or disgracing them remains the only viable option preferable.
The major problem with Oshiomhole resides mainly in his impetuosity and hubris. The Comrade we knew as a fiery intrepid labour leader changed the moment he became Governor tasting the filthy lucre or the allures of power. Power corrupts good manners and in Oshiomhole we have seen how power could transform one into a monster! He could not be counted as among those for whom gold holds no allure.
He had claimed that he had defeated godfatherism in his home state yet he positioned himself as a replacement of what he fought and conquered gloriously. That could pass easily as the height of hypocrisy.
The political immolation of Adams Oshiomhole could be said to have started in Benin city the moment he handed over power to his anointed successor believing childishly that he had Edo treasury in his pocket. And it could attain its epilogue sooner or later in Abuja whenever he falls from the APC national chairmanship perch.
When that eventually happens the 68-year old man from Iyamho would come to the realisation, nay conclusion, that in Nigeria politics is played differently — with little or no decorum, little or no rules of engagement. All is fair! Political low-blow, betrayal, back-stabbing etc. Then, in the event of his ouster rehabilitation could take a whole lot of courage, determination and above all, servile submission to the Buharian giddy order.
