E2%80%93cardinal-okogie Nigerian Government Incapable Of Protecting Citizens –Cardinal Okogie

Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie

Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie

Former Archbishop of Lagos, Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie, has said that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration was not capable of protecting the people from attacks by Boko Haram terrorists and other insurgent groups.
Cardinal Okogie said this while commenting on the increased call for improved security of lives of Nigerians.
The former Acrhbishop also said that the presidential spokesperson, who combine insolence and mendacity rather than give honest responses to the people, insult citizens through constant statement on the state of security in the country.
He said, “One of the biggest lies ever told by any government in the history of Nigeria is that Boko Haram has been technically defeated.
“Boko Haram has not been defeated.  It is in fact waxing stronger.
“Any government spokesperson, presidential media assistant or service chief, who says that Boko Haram has been defeated, will be answerable to God for every life that Boko Haram has destroyed.
“Nigerians have the right and duty to interrogate government on the level of insecurity in this country, but instead of honest responses, they are insulted by Presidential spokespersons who combine insolence and mendacity.
“With these and other indices available in the public domain, can it be sincerely said that Boko Haram is in any sense defeated?
“As government spokespersons, they are officials who are paid by the people.
“Nigeria’s money belongs to Nigerians, not to government. Such a mistaken assumption encourages mismanagement of Nigeria’s wealth.
“It also makes government officials ignore the fact that the people they insult by their insensitive and unguarded utterances are the same people who pay their salaries.”

US Senate Acquits President Trump Of All Impeachment Charges

The United States Senate on Wednesday acquitted President Donald Trump of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress following a historic two-week trial.
Fifty-two Republicans voted to acquit Trump of abuse of power while all 47 Democrats voted to convict and remove him from office, according to the AFP.
Utah Senator, Mitt Romney, was the only Republican to break ranks, voting for conviction on the abuse of power charge.
But Romney sided with the Republican majority on the obstruction of Congress charge.
The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives impeached Trump on December 18 for withholding military aid to Ukraine to pressure Kiev to investigate his political rival Joe Biden.

Police Kill 250 Terrorists As Bandits Shoot At Military Helicopter

The Nigeria Police Force has said that it has successfully eliminated 250 bandits and terrorists in Kuduru Forest, Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State.
The police said that the operation was carried out jointly with the support of the Operation Puff Adder made up of the Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit, Special Forces, Intelligence Response Team, Special Tactical Squad, and Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
The police said it stormed one of the largest operational camps of the Ansaru terror group (also housing other bandits and kidnappers) where over 250 high-profile members of the group were killed.
The force noted that the operation was, “Necessitated by actionable intelligence linking terror and criminal elements in the super camp to series of terror-related violence, kidnappings, gun-running, cattle rustling and other heinous crimes across the country.”
It added that during the operation, two pilots manning a Police Bell helicopter were shot at and they sustained minor injuries.
“Unfortunately, during the operation, a Police Bell helicopter, which provided aerial and intelligence cover for the ground troops came under attack from the bandits using sophisticated anti-aircraft rifles and GPMG.
“Commendably, the pilot and the co-pilot who demonstrated uncommon courage and expertise, successfully landed the aircraft at the Air Force Base, Kaduna, without further incident.
“They were thereafter evacuated for medical treatment.
“Both officers who sustained non-life threatening injuries are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition.”

E2%80%99s-trial Amnesty International Condemns Use Of Administrative Procedures To Prolong Jalingo’s Trial

Amnesty International has condemned what it described as the use of administrative procedures to prolong the ordeal of Agba Jalingo, who has been in prison since August 2019.
Jalingo, a journalist and Publisher of Cross River Watch, was arrested and has been in detention for publishing an article questioning the whereabouts of N500m approved for Cross River State Microfinance Bank.
AI, who sent a team to the Federal High Court in Calabar on Wednesday to witness the proceedings, expressed disappointment over what appears to be “use of technicalities to prolong the ordeal of Agba Jalingo.”
“Today, the trial of Agba Jalingo was stalled, again,” said Isa Sanusi, Spokesperson for AI in Nigeria, adding that the rights organisation “calls on federal authorities and Governor Ben Ayade to immediately release Agba Jalingo.”
Amnesty International had declared Jalingo a prisoner of conscience detained for his critical opinions.
Aside Jalingo, Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare were declared prisoners of conscience after being detained over their critical opinions.

E2%80%93united-nations 1.4 Million Refugees In Urgent Need Of Resettlement –United Nations

A new report by the United Nations has shown that around 1.4 million refugees are in urgent need of resettlement worldwide.
63,696 were resettled through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2019.
The UN noted that the number of refugees resettled in 2019 did increase modestly by 14 per cent when compared to the previous year when 55,680 people were resettled but the agency maintains that “a tremendous gap remains between resettlement needs and the places made available”.
The UN noted that in Nigeria, over two million people were internally displaced while 244,000 are refugees.
“Resettlement is not a solution for all the world’s refugees, but it is a life saving measure to ensure the protection of those most at risk and whose lives often depend on it”, said Grainne O’Hara, UNHCR’s Director of International Protection.
Out of the more than 63,000 refugees resettled last year, the largest number originated from Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Myanmar.
Increasing refugee resettlement opportunities and other complementary pathways for admission, including through family reunification, work and study routes, is one of the key objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees, said UNHCR, representing “a tangible way for states to share responsibility and show solidarity with host countries supporting large refugee populations.”

BREAKING: Lawyer Challenges Okada Ban, Drags Lagos State Government To Court

Human rights lawyer and National President of Revolutionary Lawyer’s Forum, Mr Tope Akinyode, has dragged the Lagos State governor, Speaker of the House of Assembly and Attorney-General of Lagos to court over the ban of commercial tricycles and motorcycles popular referred to as Keke and Okada.
Lagos residents have expressed displeasure over difficulty in movement since February 1, 2020 when a ban on Okada and Keke came into effect.
Tricycles and motorcycles are widely used by Lagos residents attempting to escape the city’s monstrous traffic.
Challenging the ban in court, Akinyode said the provisions of the law and its execution are a violation of the citizen’s fundamental human right to freedom of movement and to own moveable properties as enshrined under Sections 41 and 44 of the constitution.

He said, “It’s an insensitive piece of legislation which seeks to deprive citizens their fundamental rights to move without restraint or purchase moveable properties of their choices which the constitution allows.
“If the government feels a need to regulate vehicular movement, it should go to Apapa and remove the trailers which have turned that axis to a parking lot and are constituting monstrous agony to the people of Lagos State.”

Suspected Kaduna Bomber Intended To Cause Religious War, Inter-faith Group Claims

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisation for Peace has said that the man caught with Improvised Explosive Device at a Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners Chapel) in Kaduna on Sunday, Nathaniel Samuel, planned to cause religious war in Nigeria.
The incident, which happened in Sabon Tasha under Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna, sent panic across and beyond the city.
Samuel after being spotted by CCTV was accosted and handed over to the police at the Sabon Tasha Divisional Police Station.
In a statement on Wednesday, NIFROP, said Samuel’s capture was an evidence that God answers prayers.
Signed by Reverend Jeremiah Abutu, the group’s Coordinating Secretary-General, the inter-faith group said, “We are constrained to speak so as to put issues in proper perspective concerning the unfortunate incident that was recorded in Kaduna State where a supposed Christian faithful attempted to detonate an improvised explosive device in a church with over 1000 worshipers during a Sunday service.
“This act is despicable as well as condemnable in the light that had the mission been successful; Nigeria would have been thrown into mourning of phenomenal proportion, and accusing fingers would have been pointed in the wrong direction, which would further heighten religious hostilities in the country.
“No religion encourages violence and no religion encourages the taking of lives under whatever guise.
“We must state that the more significant problem is not this despicable act of attempting to bomb a Church but the fact that most religious leaders in the country are not sincere enough to condemn this act because Nathaniel Samuel is a Christian.
“They have elected to shy away from the bitter truth of condemning this act.
“However, instead they have chosen to play to the gallery and also attempt to shift blames all in a bid to change the narrative.
“The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisation for Peace would not relent in its prayers and supplication to God for his continued protection of Nigeria from those plotting evil against it.”
The Kaduna State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Yakubu Sabo, said that the command had commenced investigation to ascertain the suspect’s mission.
Over the years, Boko Haram terrorists have attacked several churches while services was ongoing, killing dozens of worshippers in the process.
Despite claims by the Nigerian Government that the insurgent group had been defeated, the terrorists continue to wreak havoc all across the country.
