The board of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s, TCN’s, NTEP -1 projects in a board resolution in Abidjan.
The NTEP is one of the projects under TREP financed by AfDB that is targeted at rehabilitating and expanding parts of the transmission grid in the North West, South South and the South East.
The project would reconstruct old transmission lines and build new ones as well as construct new substations, contributing to further increase in TCN’s transmission capacity.

Akwa Ibom monarch wants councils to expand IGR base

An Akwa Ibom monarch, Etebom Samuel Efik has advised Local Government Councils to look into other areas of the economy to expand their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) base rather than depending solely on the monthly allocations from the Federal purse.
Besides, he advised them to establish mechanized farming schemes in their areas to provide employment to the teeming unemployed youths.

Defamation, libel laws inadequate to tackle Hate Speech – Senator Sabi
Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, on Thursday said existing laws on defamation and libel are grossly inadequate to tackle hate speech in its form.
Abdullahi stated this against the backdrop of pockets of protests and reactions to the introduction of the Hate Speech Bill by the National Assembly, including a legal luminary, Afe Babalola.
According to Abdullahi, who represents Niger North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Parliaments across the world have identified ‘Hate Speech’ as a new “threat that dehumanizes and targets individuals and groups, and also threatens peace in a diversified society.”
The lawmaker stated that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which is a 47-nation member organization, in a report identified threats posed by Hate Speech to include; exclusion among minority groups, alienation, marginalisation, the emergence of parallel societies, and ultimately radicalisation.

Gov Abiodun vows to deal with illegal toll operators in Ogun

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun on Thursday vowed to severely deal with operators of illegal toll points in the State.
Abiodun, who made this known while receiving in audience a three-man team from the Ogun- Guangdong Free Trade Zone, at his office in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, said those behind these points are impeding the economic growth of the State and would be treated as saboteurs.
He said that if there would be any levies to be placed on anyone, such levies would emanate from the state’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Appeal Court upholds Gov Ortom’s election, fines APC, Jime N150,000

The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, on Thursday, upheld the election of Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State.
The appellate court, in a unanimous judgement by a five-man panel of Justices, dismissed a joint appeal the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its candidate, Emmanuel Jime, filed to challenge the outcome of the governorship election that held in the state on March 9.
In the lead judgement that was read by Justice Fred Oho, the court resolved four issues the Appellants raised before it, against them, even as it awarded a cost of N150, 000 against them.

P&ID: EFCC asks court to reject Briton’s plea for bail variation
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday urged the Federal High Court, Abuja, not to grant the bail variation application filed by a British national, James Nolan.
The EFCC Counsel, Bala Sanga, who made the request, told Justice Okon Abang that the Commission would file a counter-affidavit on the matter.
Sanga said Nolan’s counsel, Chris Ezugwu, served on him the further affidavit, seeking the court’s leave to grant their request, on Wednesday.

As husband rape, abuse stepdaughters
Chief Ademola Odunade, the President of a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan, on Thursday dissolved a nine-year-old marriage between one Mary Dickson and John Dickson for persistently raping the two daughters she had before marrying him.
Odunade pronounced the union dissolved, adding that the court might be left with no other option than to order Dickson’s arrest if he refused to take up the responsibility of the children produced by the marriage.

Otuaro urges Patani leaders to unite, facilitate development

Deputy Governor of Delta State, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro, has advised political leaders of Patani Local Government Area in the state to sink their differences and collaborate to attract development to the area.
The deputy governor gave the charge at an interdenominational birthday/thanksgiving/reception of illustrious sons and daughters of Patani local government, led by His Royal Majesty, Shedrack Peremobowei Erebulu, Aduwo III, Pere of Kabowei Kingdom.
He specially commended the chair of the area, Hon Perekebena Omoun for his developmental strides and proactive approach in tackling insecurity in Patani.
